You Are Guaranteed to See Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles on Your Tour

Green Sea Turtles are usually found in the tropical and subtropical seas. They live in warm shallow water as they are cold-blooded animals and can not produce heat inside the body themselves.

We embark on our South Maui Turtle Town Kayak Tour and Snorkel from historic Makena Landing, launching our craft against a background dominated by the iconic crest of Haleakala Crater.

Your Certified Marine Naturalist guide will share interesting sea turtle facts as you paddle alongside the Makena and Wailea coast, enjoying breathtaking views of the West Maui Mountains, Molokini Crater, and the nearby islands of Kaho’olawe and Lana’i.

Fun Facts: Sea turtles typically live between 30 and 50 years, with some documented cases of sea turtles living as long as 150 years.

Once we arrive at Turtle Town, you’ll find dozens of independent reefs strung throughout this popular cleaning station for Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles. Turtle Town is often teeming with tourists as well as turtles, but your guide will lead you away from the crowds to snorkel with sea turtles in a less frequented, but just as stunning, snorkel spot tucked among the varied reefs.

Sea turtles love the underwater caves and arches dotting the reefs, including Five Caves and Turtle Arches, and you’ll find plenty of resident sea turtles year-round – if you know where to look. Your guide will show you the hidden hangouts of these peace-loving, long-time residents.

Turtle Town is usually protected from Maui’s summer trade winds during the early mornings, making this an ideal summer snorkeling location. The shallow, sunlit reefs and calm water conditions are perfect for families with small children and first-time snorkelers, but Turtle Town offers a delightful experience for ocean enthusiasts of all skill levels!

Before leaving on your Coral Gardens Kayak and Snorkel Tour, your guide will give you a brief water safety and paddling orientation before launching your kayaks from Olowalu Beach across from the stunning West Maui Mountains. Along the way, you’ll learn interesting facts about sea turtles from your guide, a Certified Marine Naturalist.

Paddling across the warm waters above Coral Gardens, you’ll appreciate the vivid reef teeming with color and life. Sandy bottoms mixed with patches of vibrant coral make this a favorite year-round snorkel spot for visitors to Maui.

Fun Fact: Turtles do not have teeth. … Carnivorous turtles have a sharp hooked beak they can use to kill their prey. Vegetarian turtles have broad, flat beaks for crushing and mashing plants.

When you’re ready, your guide will lead you from this shallow water playground into slightly deeper water and a turtle cleaning station, where you’ll discover Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles and an abundance of other fascinating marine life.

Because this snorkel location can sometimes get a bit windy, the Coral Gardens Kayak Tour and Snorkel is best suited to older children and adults who are comfortable in the ocean.

A Maui Turtle Town Outrigger Canoe Tour and Snorkel offers plenty of amazing opportunities to snorkel with Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles. Ideal for families with small children, first-time paddlers or snorkelers and people looking for a gentle ocean paddling and snorkeling experience, this popular snorkel spot features calm waters and protection from summer trade winds most mornings.

Although outrigger canoe tours are not strictly private (like our kayak or stand up paddle tours), we never include more than six guests per tour. And if you want to really dive into authentic Hawaiian culture and history, this is a fantastic tour for you.  As you paddle toward Turtle Town, your guide will share Hawaiian stories and lore, information about traditional Hawaiian outrigger canoes like the one you’re paddling, and interesting facts about Hawaiian sea turtles. In the distance, Molokini Crater and Kahoolawe stand at the center point in the sea as the piko (belly button) of the Hawaiian Islands.

Fun Fact: Just as sailors use latitude and longitude to navigate the high seas, turtles sense slight variations in the planet’s magnetic field and are able to pinpoint specific coastlines based on their magnetic signature.

There are many prime snorkeling locations to choose from among the various independent reef formations at Turtle Town, and your guide will help you choose a more private spot away from the busy tourist boats. Once you reach your favorite snorkel spot, you’ll get out of the canoe and into the water to snorkel with sea turtles, tropical fish, and other fascinating marine animals.

Maui’s lighter winds from October to April make Olowalu a perfect winter location for a Stand Up Paddle Board Lesson. Paddle above a shallow reef brimming with tropical fish and Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles below a stunning view of the historical Olowalu and Ukumehame valleys.

Your guide will share interesting facts about the sea turtles, tropical fish species and seals unique to Hawaii. Haleakala, Molokini Crater, Kahoolawe, Lanai, and Molokai loom in the distance, and you could even spot Hawai’i’s Big Island on a clear day.

Though Olowalu makes a great spot for SUP lessons when the weather is good, it can be quite challenging in strong winds or if winds are blowing in the wrong direction. Weather conditions can change so check with our staff to see if Olowalu is suitable for your stand up paddle boarding lesson.
