South Maui Stand Up Paddle Lessons and Tour

SouthMaui

We begin our Private Stand Up Paddle Board Lessons and Tours on Makena’s sunny southern shore. Blocked from trade winds most mornings, Makena Bay offers a sheltered cove to learn how to paddle or take a SUP tour out to Turtle Town through gentle waters.

Gliding across the glassy surface, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Molokini Crater and neighboring islands Kahoolawe and Lana`i. But don’t forget to look down! Stand up paddle boarding offers a unique opportunity to get super close to the colorful reefs below brimming with Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles and colorful tropical fish. Plus, you'll learn fun sea turtle facts from your guide while floating above them on your board.

Usually, this SUP location is good for beginners and children, but weather conditions can change, so check with our staff for help choosing the ideal spot for your Stand Up Paddle Board Lesson or SUP Tour.

West Maui Stand Up Paddle Lessons and Tour

WestMaui

Maui’s lighter winds from October to April make Olowalu a perfect winter location for a Private Stand Up Paddle Board Lesson. Paddle above a shallow reef teeming with easily visible tropical fish and Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles, and take in stunning views of historical Olowalu and Ukumehame valleys above the surface.

Your guide will share interesting facts about the sea turtles, tropical fish species and seals unique to Hawaii along the way. Haleakala, Molokini Crater, Kahoolawe, Lanai, and Molokai loom in the distance, and you could even spot Hawai’i’s Big Island on a clear day.

Olowalu is close to Lahaina, Kaanapali and Maalea, and it's a great spot for SUP lessons when the weather is good. However, weather conditions can change quickly so make sure you check with our staff to see if Olowalu is suitable for your stand up paddle boarding lesson.

Kapalua Stand Up Paddle Lessons and Tour

HonoluaBay

Edging the northwest side of Maui, Kapalua Bay is a gorgeous, partially-sheltered bay popular with snorkelers and paddlers. Our Private Stand Up Paddle Lessons at Kapalua usually come with crystal clear waters and breathtaking surrounding views. Kapalua’s climate is different from the rest of our drier SUP spots across the island, and that’s part of its unique charm. Verdant pines and deciduous trees line the horizon in this forested pocket of paradise.

However, while it is partly protected from the strongest winds, Maui’s northwest coast can be a bit temperamental. Occasionally reminiscent of the mainland’s northwest coast, gray or rainy days and strong surf dot the winter months, and summer can bring strong trade winds, making paddling Kapalua Bay a challenge for first-timers.

More experienced stand up paddlers shouldn’t have a problem here, and despite the sporadic stormy day, we usually complete our SUP lessons successfully. But we like to be transparent about possible inclement weather that could create a challenge here anyway.

Regardless of your skill level, our knowledgeable staff can help you decide if Kapalua Bay is a good choice for your private stand up paddle lesson based on the weather and your experience. If you’re staying in Lahaina, Kahana, Kapalua, Napili or Kaanapali but don’t want to take a chance on Kapalua, we’re happy to offer several other nearby locations for your SUP lesson.

WHAT IS SUP?

Stand Up Paddling is kind of like surfing and kind of like kayaking. You stand up (or kneel if you want to) on a SUP board, which is a little thicker than a surf board, and you navigate with a long paddle like you would in a kayak. While you ride small waves on a stand up paddle board, generally you’ll be paddling on top of calm waters and viewing the marine life below.

WHY PRIVATE SUP LESSONS ON MAUI?

Almost anyone can learn to stand up paddle with proper instruction. Private SUP lessons give you and your party the time and attention you need to feel confident and enjoy your SUP experience.

Our expert stand up paddle board instructors tailor your private lesson to your specific needs and wants. You’re in charge! Stay close to the beach or venture out on a long coastal tour depending on your comfort level and ability. Plus, our stand up paddle board guides are skilled photographers, and they’ll provide you with free digital photos of your SUP lesson.

Our knowledgeable staff can help you choose the best location for your SUP lesson based on current weather conditions and your skill level.
